(Track from album, “Beacon”)
Ok, it wasn't long ago that I reviewed an old, first album Two Door track - their very best song ever in fact. However, "Someday" jumped out of the TV, punched me in the face and is practically begging to be reviewed...this track doesn't steal the title of best Two Door song or anything like that, but it comes very bloody close...
I dismissed "Beacon", the band's much-awaited second outing, simply because of the weakness of its lead single, "Sleep Alone", which, was very so-so to say the least. The band, for me anyway, suffered somewhat from having a lot to live up to and, unlike their supposed musical rivals The Vaccines, I felt like the "Beacon" tracks were a new direction, rather than a continuation of the classic style I had so much enjoyed beforehand. That in itself isn't a bad thing, but it made for some easily spotted failed attempts at experimentation with a new-ish sound. "Someday", I apparently overlooked...
The band performed an ecstatic live version of this song on "Later...With Jools Holland" a few weeks ago (as shown below), and, after almost having a fit as the incredible jangle invaded the otherwise mundane atmosphere of my living room at 11 o'clock at night, I rushed with incredible haste to the studio version of the track - however, the live performance was no 'version'...
It seems as though I just forgot about this truly epic track, which, was just as exciting on the album as it was live. The morse code bleeps fade the track in and, before you know it, the Toor Door riffs are back, flooding through in waves of flanged up awesomeness and with mature ferocity which has grown out of the old album (one of the band's more successful new moves). The bass is groovy and weaves its way around the intricate lead, both instruments bleating beautifully over a classic indie drum line. Oooooooooh...it makes me smile just thinking about it. And then you've got the cheeky little guitar riffs during the post-chorus drum-fills and this helps to really tie the whole thing up with a bright red bow. The bridge is amazing and roars, despite retaining a neat little indie finish in the Carter USM-esque syncopated synth sequencing. Mmmmmmm...synthesisers backing jangly guitars...
The lyrics are just as corny as ever, but what do you want. This is a great little track with epic sonic elements - the vocal itself is clean, and emotive; so what if the words are less genius than the guitars? If you had to have one or the other, you'd have the instrumentation with this band, and, thankfully, that's exactly what you get...and Johnny Marr would be proud!
You are obliged check this song out NOW! It rocks!
